Blood is not a mosquito’s everyday meal. It is part of a reproductive strategy used by females of many species.

Mosquitoes mostly run on sugar
Male and female mosquitoes normally obtain energy from plant sugars, including flower nectar and other natural sources. Males do not bite people or animals. Their mouthparts are not adapted to pierce skin and take a blood meal.
Females also use plant sugars for energy, but females of many species need nutrients from blood to develop eggs. The blood meal supports reproduction; it is not the mosquito’s main fuel.
A highly specialized mouthpart
A female mosquito uses a slender mouthpart called a proboscis. It is a bundle of fine structures that can pierce skin, locate a small blood vessel, deliver saliva, and draw blood. The saliva helps the mosquito feed efficiently. Our immune response to components in that saliva produces the familiar bump and itch.
Different mosquito species prefer different hosts. Some feed mainly on birds, others on mammals, and some readily feed on people. Host preference is one reason different mosquito species are associated with different disease cycles.
Why one bite can matter
Most mosquito bites are simply uncomfortable. However, some mosquitoes can act as vectors, meaning they can carry certain pathogens between hosts. A mosquito does not automatically become infectious after every blood meal. A compatible pathogen must survive and multiply inside the mosquito before reaching its salivary glands.
Because it is impossible to identify an infectious mosquito by sight, preventing bites remains the sensible approach even when local disease risk is low.
A useful shift in perspective
Thinking of female mosquitoes as egg-producing insects helps explain why standing-water control works. Fewer suitable places to lay eggs means fewer opportunities for the next generation to develop. Personal protection reduces bites today; habitat control reduces tomorrow’s mosquitoes.
